MUSIC
PRACTICES & EXPERIMENTS
THE GONG
Exploring the nature of sound, we discovered a “fundamental tone” — a frequency that once lay at the heart of music as a direct dialogue with the planet, and served as a tuning reference for healing and prayer.
We installed twelve flat bells, each tuned to this tone, around the Earth along the 30th parallel north — in some of the most significant historical centers of human civilization, including the Giza pyramids, Jerusalem, Delhi, Lhasa, the sacred mountains of China, and others. Twice a year — on the solstices — they ring simultaneously, encircling the Earth in this shared sound.
DOLPHIN JAZZ
If there is something universal that can connect the language of dolphins with that of humans, it is music — a way of transmitting feelings directly, from one being to another. When musicians on our expedition vessels play for whales, the ship is soon surrounded — they listen, respond, and take part. What follows is the most astonishing interspecies jam session one can imagine.
SANCTUARY
Together with our musician friends, we also organize musical events on land — in ports, town squares, cathedrals, and museums.
The musical project “Sanctuary” is a symbol of this belief: that a conscious being is truly intelligent only when it takes responsibility for protecting any place it inhabits.
Regular participants in this traveling project include David Rothenberg (saxophone), Arkady Shilkloper (French horn), Bernard Abeille (double bass), Alizbar (multi-instrumentalist), David Swarup (hang drum), Yukimi Yamamoto (vocals), and other remarkable musicians.
RECONSTRUCTION
Harmonic sound — music — is also a way to reconstruct events of the past and a key to many unexplained phenomena.
With fellow musicians, we’ve experimented with recreating the melodies of ancient cultures, seeking contact with other life forms, identifying musical codes of the Earth’s surface, and exploring meaning-based spaces such as the Labyrinth.
WHALE SONGS
In whales and dolphins, unlike in humans, the brain areas responsible for processing sound and visual information are not separated. They quite literally see sound and hear image.
To get closer to understanding their language, we work with programmers who have developed a special interface for visualizing sound.
Through it, we record and “watch” the songs of dolphins and whales — the most virtuosic performers on Earth.

COMPOSING
For many years, from time to time, we’ve composed songs — sometimes to our own words, sometimes to the poetry of others — and performed them among friends, as part of a group called White Hole.
